For Pride Month, the story of the cut off sleeve

So, there is a story about Han Dynasty China, a time and place where bisexuality was the norm. Emperor Ai was having a nap in a traditional long-sleeve robe with his male companion, Dong Xian.

Eventually, the Emperor awoke from his nap, but his lover had not. To avoid waking him up, he instead chose to cut off the sleeve Dong Xian was sleeping on.

This spread through the court, and in tribute the Emperor's courtiers cut off one of their own sleeves. The tale eventually gave way to the saying “the passion of the cut sleeve", a euphemism for intimacy between two men.

I'm reading a simplified version of Journey to the West (Chinese mythology that created the Monkey King) and I'm having so much fun with it. Chinese isn't my first language, so the version I'm using tries its best to keep the vocab to a 1200 word limit. The goal being to help people improve their reading. And it's totally working, but the real intriguing part is the story.

The story is just so engaging and funny, and the characters, as flawed as they are, are really endearing. Like, it's clear why this thing became Chinese mythology in the first place.

But because it's written in an easier way to read, my brain puts into a "kind of made for kids" category, and having that mindset makes the things I'm reading all the crazier and more hilarious.

I'm Reading A Simplified Version Of Journey To The West (Chinese Mythology That Created The Monkey King)

Like, of all the things I expected to read in my second language, this was not one of them. 😂

The Vast Majority (around 80%) Of Chinese Characters Are Made Up Of A Radical (the General Meaning) And

The vast majority (around 80%) of Chinese characters are made up of a radical (the general meaning) and a phonetic.

Radical 女 nǚ (woman) and phonetic 馬 mǎ (horse) = 媽 mā, mother (your mum sounds like a horse).

But a small minority are pictograms, that is to say a picture of the thing they represent.

Pictograms are the earliest characters, thousands of years old, but many are still used every day.

If you look at the oracle bone script for rat, tiger and elephant you’ll see they are clearly pictures of the animal they signify.

But if you look at the modern versions, you’ll notice something odd, they’re all rotated 90 degrees onto their sides.

Why? Why are all these characters written with the animals balancing on their tails?

Well, it’s for a straight-forward, practical reason.

For a couple thousand years before paper was invented writing materials were limited. We had silk (expensive), bronze (expensive and impractical), and oracle bones (religious use only).

And one more…

That was cheap, plentiful, durable, and easy to erase and rewrite characters. The wonder that is…

Bamboo!

It was cut into strips, and tied into books. Long thin strips of bamboo contributed to the Chinese custom of writing vertically, from top to bottom (and right to left).

But it also meant that it’s much easier to write some characters length-ways so that they easily fit onto the strip.

So that’s it, mystery solved. That’s why a lot of Chinese picture characters are written at a right angle.

The Sohmas (Fruits Basket) as Birthstones based on the month corresponding with their cursed member of the Chinese zodiac:

I decided to make this because to me “Fruits Basket” was the “Steven Universe” for me before I even watched the latter show. Tohru is kind of like Steven in a way, healing lost broken things/people with their kindness and loving nature. Tohru even has a dead mother and lives with 3 other people. That’s pretty much it though.

One reason why I’m doing this is because I wanted to make a “Steven Universe” version of this anime since anime is definitely smiled upon in that show. So in my headcanon the show in that universe will be called Fruit Salad (call me out if you can think of a better title). Instead of turning into animals when stressed or hugged by the opposite sex, they will turn into their true form as aliens from another galaxy. So there’s no need to worry them being naked when they change back. That’s pretty much all I got for now considering it’s just a headcanon of an anime within a cartoon show.

So here’s the list so far.

Hatsuharu – Garnet (Gem Placement: nose, forehead, chest, left hand, or right hand)

Kisa – Amethyst (Gem Placement: stomach or back)

Momiji – Aquamarine (Gem Placement: chest, stomach, or back)

Hatori – Diamond (Gem Placement: one of his eyes, forehead, or back)

Ayame  - Emerald (Gem Placement: chest, neck, tongue, or uvula)

Isuzu – Pearl (Gem Placement: chest or nose)

Hiro – Ruby (Gem Placement: forehead or neck)

Ritsu – Peridot (Gem Placement: stomach or back)

Kureno – Sapphire (Gem Placement: stomach)

Shigure – Opal (Gem Placement: forehead or neck)

Kagura – Topaz (Gem Placement: chest, right hand, or left hand)

Yuki – Turquoise (Gem Placement: forehead)

Kyo – Bloodstone (because of his beads for is bracelet were from bones and some were dipped with blood. Not to mention that it was a stand-in for the March birthstone. This is one of the closest months to February, the month of the Tiger. Tiger being a feline that should be quite fitting for the unofficial year of the cat) (Gem Placement: Nose, chest, right hand, or left hand)

Akito -  Serpentine (SNEOPLE!) (Gem Placement: forehead)

This are not set in stone (pun intended). This is just a basis for what their gems need to be to fit with their cursed years. If you want to help find a gem that truly fits them and still corresponds with their animal month. Here’s something to help. Just search the stones for their following signs (except for Kyo and Akito. They’re the rebels).

 Hatsuharu – Capricorn

Kisa – Aquarius

Momiji – Pisces

Hatori – Aries

Ayame  - Taurus

Isuzu – Gemini

Hiro – Cancer

Ritsu – Leo

Kureno – Virgo

Shigure – Libra

Kagura – Scorpio

Yuki – Sagittarius

Just to be clear I’m going by their cursed dates, not birthdates (if I was there would have been 4 rubies and 2 garnets). Be free to help decide where all their gem placements should be. Just keep in my mind that “gem placements = personality influence” is the unspoken canon of the Steven Universe show.

Thank you for reading and have a blessed day.

I study Japanese while I'm in high school and Chinese in college. you might see some difference from korean than the other two,

the best way to separate them if you learn some of the language and notice it's writing system.

the korean hangul way of writing is far so different from the other two. therefore it's easy to point it out first.

당신은 게이입니다

then Japanese... there's a hard problem, some of the Kanji is also used. but they also use hiragana so if you see them faster more.

君はゲイです

Lastly Mandarin.... as the oldest language from the three of them. a way of somewhat point it out is the same thing to see if the writing is in Japanese, but in reverse.

你是同性恋

in the end of the day. just hope someone wont write "I have a big dick" in all of those language in one sentence and being it send to you.

I don’t really understand getting mad at people for mixing up korean, chinese, and japanese

Like, look at them together

見る한국어中国死ね我要吃你マンコ형사我有大鸡巴

and tell me they don’t look similar lol
