I’m so emotional about dinosaur stuffed animals,,, there are these creatures, extinct long before any of us were alive, but we found their bones and their eggs and their footprints. And we made drawings and models of what they could’ve looked like. And we made them into stuffed animals so we could hold them. We made them soft so we could love them. I’m sobbing

Dad Talks. EP. 1 | Ethical Economics AKA Humanity vs. Capitalism

The Context - Discussion with friend over text

Friend : We still put money before people.

Me : But as humanity grows we’re more knowledgeable now, and we’ll catch people and hold them accountable for it.

Friend : Literally the opposite has happened.

Me : I refuse to give up on the good of humanity.

Friend : Oh, Humanity is good. Capitalism is evil.

The Discussion with Dad - Also over text, and prompted by me presenting the above discussion and my thoughts on it.

Me : Greed is evil, economy is a neutral entity that is wielded. It is one man’s greed that sours it.

Well this poses an interesting question.

Can a concept, which due to the nature of human history, is created by man be neutral? If it is created by humans, who are intrinsically biased and lean forwards either positive or negative questions, then can it truly be neutral?

Can I claim that something man made is neutral when I proclaim man is good but inherently fallible?

Dad : Sounds like you are doing fine. You pose the more interesting question. Capitalism, and even the idea of economics, are man-made creations. But not necessarily in the way a building or an invention is, or.a book or painting.

Economics comes from the idea that humans require, or desire, certain things to survive, and take action to acquire those things. As the types and numbers of things fluctuate, as well as how many humans and there are and how those things are produced, certain patterns of behavior emerge that seem to be driven by the numerous variable. Hence we study economics as a sort of science - it seems to operate under certain principles that can be deduced by observation and testing. It’s sort of like anthropology or sociology, we are trying to understand how humans have developed or how they will respond.

Me : So in considering it’s study being a science, can we presume we should be neutral in judging its patterns and more so directing moral judgements on those who use the properties of economics to act?

Dad : Capitalism is at, its heart, a theory of economics. One might even say it is the most basic and fundamental theory of how economics works. But it makes assumptions about how people respond to their economic stimuli and their motives. The primary assumption is that people will act to maximize their things. (Keep in mind that I am not an economist and that there is a great deal of literature on this topic - it has been studied a lot.)

There are other theories that predict that people and societies react differently. Capitalism tends to be more individualistic. Socialism and communism more focused on the wellness of the group.

Me : So does capitalism assume greed or does capitalism encourage greed?

Dad : I think you can approach any of those theories with a certain neutrality; the theories themselves are neither good nor evil. How people apply those theories can be approached from an ethical standpoint.

Me : Fair.

Dad : Does capitalism assume greed or encourage greed? Interesting question. Probably both, but even greed might not be the right word.

Then the question is what is the word that capitalism works off of.

Well, the question overall is interesting because in economics it is difficult to separate economic theory from an economic system. That is precisely because humans are involved. It is a bit like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle or Schrodinger’s Cat - you can’t know the outcome or state of the system unless you act to measure it, but your act of measuring it determines the state of the system.

In economics, how one believes the system works depends partly on how one believes humans act or should act, and humans can work in different ways.

Me : Damn.

This leaves me and my friend very much at odds because I believe we think inherently differently on the way humans work. I think we both find humans to be naturally good, but I more easily overlook the times human do bad to embrace the times human do good while they are the reverse.

I will lean towards capitalism because I like the individualistic approach while still having great faith that more times than not humans will do good.

Dad : You will find there are several different version of capitalism as an economic and political ideology.

Me : But my friend leans towards socialism because they have seen too many times that humanity can be bad and the system abused, so an economic plan for the welfare of all appeals more to them because they believe the opportunity for bad is inherently tempting.

It worries me that I may only find capitalism appealing because I think I myself will work well in it, or perhaps that is my privilege that leads me to favor capitalism.

Dad : Humans are involved in all of these systems. There are no robots or divine forces that will be kind to everyone if only we let them.

Socialism relies on good governance to work. It can be as poorly applied as capitalism.

Me : True.

Dad : Capitalism often maximizes freedom of the individual, which allows individuals to flourish more than other systems, but also allows individuals fail more than other systems. It can also lead to unhealthy balances of power or wealth that can twist the system into actually being intrinsically unfair. This is likely because capitalism is a near perfect theory in an ‘unbounded’ system (resources and people and space are limitless), but when applied more practically to the bounded systems we actually live in it needs some regulation and constraint. (My own personal theory - might be complete B.S.)

Me : Don’t sell yourself too short, it’s the observation of peers that make a theory sound.

The Master, to the people he has created - “You do not have the will to do it.”

The People he made, responds with - “You may have made us, Man of Evil, but we are free.”

Lots of thoughts recently. Everything feels plastic.

I could go on and on about why all that AI "art" is bad. I could mention theft, lack of creativity, it's impact on the work field and environment, but countless people have already said all that. I wanted to touch on something that to me is the most utterly wrong about all of it.

Art is more than just something pretty to look at or listen to. It's therapeutic. It's a form of communication. A tool for human connection. It's a pure, human need.

Cases of Skin Rash are increasing everyday because of bacterial , fungal or viral infections , on the other sides alot of insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and flies, which act as vectors. What we are witnessing in shelter centers and displacement camps from the accumulation of stagnant water and inadequate management of waste and sanitation provides a fertile ground for disease vectors. Every day we see in our Medical point about 50 cases of multi-cause rash. 😥💔

People speak sometimes about the "bestial" cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts, no animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel.

Sean Bienvenidos Japonistasarqueologicos A Una Nueva Entrega En Esta Ocasión, Les Os Voy A Traer La

Welcome japonistasarqueologicos to a new installment. This time, I'm going to bring you the definition of what archaeology is, what are its sub-disciplines. Having said that, make yourselves comfortable, we're starting.

-

Surely we've all asked ourselves at some point: What is archaeology? What periods does it cover? What countries does it study? Surely when we talk about archaeology, many of us think of images like dinosaurs or Indiana Jones, they are a classic, but that is a wrong view, since archaeologists are not dedicated to that.

-

Archaeology as a discipline is interdisciplinary, which means that it borrows from other disciplines what it needs: such as history, biology, mathematics, chemistry, physics and astronomy, among others. An archaeologist must have a minimum knowledge of all the existential disciplines, since in an archaeological site we can find everything, we must know how to identify each element that we find, but in the site there is a team of specialists in history, biology and other disciplines, who are in charge of their respective studies, archaeology is a discipline of group work.

I hope you liked it and see you in future publications.

This city is less known in terms of the archaeological remains of its disaster, but they are just as important because the reflection left by the bomb can be seen. - Greetings and may events like this not happen again, because history is cyclical. I hope we learn from our mistakes and end the wars in our present 2024 and those of the future. A publication in memory of the fallen, my most sincere condolences.

- In this publication we will talk about the Hirata Umeyama Burial Mound, located in the town of Asuka, Takaichi district, Nara prefecture, it measures 140 m and is believed to have been built at the end of the Kofun VI period AD, it was the tomb of a great king during the final period of Yamato's sovereignty. - It is administered by the Imperial Household Agency, which established a place of worship in the Hinokuma-zakaago mausoleum of Emperor Kinmei, it should be noted that 90% of the kofun are sacred. The Maruyama Burial Mound, located in the city of Kashihara, is the largest burial mound in Nara Prefecture and the 6th in Japan and has a length of 318 m. It is the tomb of Emperor Kinmei. - It should be noted that until studies are carried out it is difficult to know, but as I said before, since they are sacred sites, studies are difficult. "Konjaku Monogatari Shu" (Collection of Tales of Bygone Times), which was completed at the end of the Heian period, contains an annotation suggesting that the Hirata Umeyama mound was the tomb of Emperor Kinmei, so it was already thought to be the tomb of the Emperor Kinmei in the Middle Ages - During the Edo period, the mound and its surroundings were greatly modified. Regarding its original position, the Hirata Umeyama mound has characteristics of the Asuka period. Due to its relationship with the Maruyama burial mound located in the city of Kashihara, it is only about 700 m away. - I hope you liked it and see you in future posts.

Sean Bienvenidos, Japonistasarqueologicos A Una Nueva Entrega De Historia Nipona En La Que Os Pongo

- Welcome, Japanese archaeologists, to a new instalment of Japanese history in which I bring you images of the epicentres after the bombings of 6 and 9 August, so make yourselves comfortable and let's get started. - First of all I would like to give some historical context to understand the situation, Japan was losing the war and they were looking for desperate ways to stop the American advance that was looming over the land of the rising sun. They resorted to kamikazes by air and land in fact they were preparing in Japan a defence force with women, after the battle of Okinawa in the 82 days of combat nearly 100,000 Japanese soldiers died, more than 12,000 Americans and at least 100,000 local civilians, including hundreds who were forced to kill themselves, they would also lose the Yamato in the last kamikaze. - Hiroshima City: 6 August 1945, Little Boy was dropped from the Enola Gay, killing over 70,000 people instantly and many more would die from radiation. Nagasaki City: 9 August 1945, Fat Man, was the other atomic bomb dropped from the same plane, killing 49,000 people on the day of the explosion. - Conclusion: The costs were terrible, as the consequences themselves were even more so. I hope that there will be no more atomic bombs, or any other type of bomb, and that mankind should learn from the mistakes of history so that wars will end. Publication in memory of all those who were killed by atomic bombs. - I hope you liked it and see you in future publications. Have a good week.

I can't bear the amount of pain I'm going through, especially in Ramadan, which is supposed to be the month of mercy and peace, but it has become the month of hunger, fear and destruction. Everything is collapsing, there is not enough food, no water, no electricity, not even a single moment of safety. The days pass slowly, and death surrounds us from every direction, until we no longer know if we will complete this month or if we will just be numbers in the news,…..

Imagine walking for miles beneath a merciless sun, each step a battle against exhaustion. The empty water containers in your hands feel heavier with every faltering step, but you press on through rubble-strewn streets, driven by the desperate need to find clean water for your family.

Your vision blurs, dark spots dancing at the edges, and your heart pounds with the effort to stay upright. The heat is suffocating, your limbs tremble with fatigue, but you force yourself forward, refusing to give in. Then, without warning, your strength gives out. Your legs buckle, and you collapse onto the burning earth, dust rising around you as darkness claims your senses.

Story written by @rumiandroses

For most in Gaza, each day is a battle for survival—but for fifteen year old Ahmed Aldani, who is chronically ill, the struggle is far more severe. His body is being pushed to its limits by the relentless strain of hunger, pain, and exhaustion. He needs urgent medical care and a chance to escape the nightmare that has become his everyday life.

Image: Ahmed recently reached out to us with an update on his condition.

Every task, no matter how small, has become a struggle for survival. Just a few weeks ago, Ahmed collapsed while walking 3 kilometers (almost 2 miles) to fill water—his body having difficulty sustaining the effort, in desperate need of medical care that, without financial help, is out of reach for Ahmed and his family.

Born amidst conflict, Ahmed has spent all fifteen years of his life enduring the effects of war. The development of his teeth and hair were negatively impacted by toxic gas his mother inhaled during a phosphorus attack while pregnant with him in 2008. The recommended treatment—dental implants—is far beyond his family’s means, with each tooth costing around $1,000. But without treatment, the pain and exhaustion will only worsen.

Ahmed’s family has been displaced more than seven times in the past ten months, their savings drained just to stay alive. They now live in the southern part of Gaza, jobless and with no access to proper medical care.

This GoFundMe is a lifeline, both for Ahmed’s survival and for his family’s chance to escape Gaza and access the medical treatment he so desperately needs. The goal is to raise $50,000 to cover travel expenses, medical care, and a chance for Ahmed to finally rest, heal, and grow up without pain overshadowing every moment.

Ahmed needs your help—now more than ever. Even the smallest donation can help bring him closer to the care he needs to reclaim his health and his future.

You can donate to Ahmed's GoFundMe campaign [HERE].

Ahmed's campaign has been vetted by @gazavetters, and is (#198) on their list of verified campaigns.

I'm an intern and my job is to enter addresses from hand-written letters into the database and did you know that Joshua Neumann from Hermannstreet 4, Cologne, has a life too

Oh

He's a principal in a small town. I googled it.

A mid-50s couple donated 100 dollars to our cause and I said that's very generous of you and he shrugged and said is it really

Oh

I guess it isn't really. Not for us.

When I came back after New Year the woman I've been working a lot with saw me in the office kitchen and hugged me.

I googled a scrawled address to decipher it and the town was so pretty I'm going to go there on a day trip with some friends. By train. Like we did 2 years ago.

You know what I'm saying, you know it.

I love people.

I always hire my guests to help me with ‘chores’ (if they’re willing!), the kind of task that’s fun at first but less fun when you have to keep going for hours (burning all the broom bushes in the pasture, picking many kg of berries to make syrup, carrying a mountain of logs into the wood shed and building stable log piles so they don’t come cascading down later…) And every time I’m amazed by the way humans can make the most tedious tasks genuinely fun through… group dynamics? just the way people start interacting and bonding with each other when everyone is focused on the same repetitive physical activity. It’s hard to find examples because it’s always so specific to each situation; but I mean things like

people spontaneously specialising and developing a feeling of expertise and pride in their subtrade, no matter how silly (putting away firewood involved one Log Selecter outside going back and forth delivering logs to two Pile Builders who piled them up in the shed, and each rapidly created their own well-oiled System and became convinced it would be hard to replace them now that they had mastered their craft)

new vocabulary being coined and immediately adopted (the Pile Builders came up with nicknames for logs of different lengths and shapes so they could ‘order’ them from the Log Selecter more efficiently—”I’ve got a One-Armed Bandit here, I need another one to fit next to it, but with an ‘arm’ on the other side” “Here” “The arm is on the same side!” “Just turn it around and the arm will be on the other side”)

songs emerging almost by themselves (a song about fishing mussels was repurposed into a song about picking plums; a whole new song was invented to encourage weirdly-shaped logs to fit in with the others as we tried to fill all the gaps)

stories being told. Weaving a trivial task into a complex imaginary plot and context to make it more entertaining and meaningful

the extremely human compulsion to write down our knowledge to share it with future generations (I was told to take note of the best & quickest knot to tie up foliage when making tree hay, for the benefit of whoever does it next summer)

beliefs as to the Right Way To Do Things quickly solidifying into myths or superstitions, as we forget what drove us to do things this way in the first place, but trust that we had good reasons so now it’s the Way It’s Done

I always tell people to help only if they feel like it and we can stop anytime and I’ll finish later by myself, but what usually happens instead is that they want to come back at the same time next year to do this exact chore again because of how they’ve made it theirs in just a few days (or in one afternoon!) Give a group of humans a banal task and while they’re at it they will come up with a whole new inside slang, a few work songs and a handful of founding texts and myths, until it feels special and important. I love seeing the way these miniature folklores just emanate from people doing things together.

...i begging yall do not get desensitised to reading these. this is horrific. this is evil. children... were shredded... SHREDDED. do you understand what that means? do you get how evil someone has to be to do that to another person? can you process that sheer malevolence and wickedness it would take to do that??!! to a child?!?!!!

"Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud from Rafah, southern Gaza: About seven people, a mother and her children were killed earlier today. We’ve seen video from the hospital where their bodies were taken. The children’s bodies arrived in plastic bags. They were shredded in the air strike on the home. The only survivor of the attack is the father.

"This pattern of killing entire families is nothing new after nearly seven months of war. Entire families have been obliterated in Israeli air strikes. Just in the past 30 minutes, there was a strike at the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. We’re trying to get more updates on that attack." from Al Jazeera English, 03/May/2024:

I hope you all are ok. I hope you all live till you are at least 80. Because I just talked my friend off the ledge. Suicide is never the answer no matter how much you wish you were dead. Even though it sounds like bull, it does get better, it gets so much better. You don't need to die to escape, you just need to find yourself. Think about the one person or people you would never want to leave behind. Set a goal, make yourself a reason why you can't leave. Don't let yourself be blinded by a superficial sense of helplessness, ending not only your life, but other people's happiness in your smile, in your little laugh, in every way you exist. You aren't ugly, you aren't evil, you aren't fake, you aren't invalid, and you aren't a disappointment. You are a human being, and you have a right to be happy, a right to live how you want, a right to love who you want, and a right to be there. Don't give up soldier, I'm counting on you.

No matter how trapped you feel, there is always a way out; and that way out may not be what you think it is.

That sobering moment when you are brushed by death. Only by proxy; a tragedy twice removed.

But you see different, taste different, feel different.

Confronted by the fragile state that is humanity. When death is more than just mortality and morbidity.

Floating without even grief to hold your heart. Unbroken and unsure.

Help me get my father and mother out and secure their lives

“The tent was their only shelter. Its winter wall was made of threadbare fabric that did not protect them from the cold or the summer heat. Inside, they lay on a thin mattress, two beaten corpses. My father and mother still suffered from diabetes and high blood pressure. They woke up every day to The sound of chronic pain and dreams that relax with every breath.
