It’s sad that toxic game culture is so prevalent cuz like. As someone who has ended up in random matches with kids before, I can attest to how fucking easy it is to reverse and un-teach shitty attitudes in kids.

Example: I downloaded Friday the 13th because it’s free on psn. I dunno how to play, so I just enter quick play and I’m matched with 3-4 kids on mic. Immediately on mic they’re shitty and disparaging to each other. They laugh at each others deaths, they actively work against team mates and self sabotage, they call each other “fags”, etc. From the sounds of the voices they cannot be older than 13-14.

I put on my mic and just decide I ain’t havin it. I am nice. I thank them for barricading doors or leaving me items. When they break free from Jason’s grasp I say “good job!” or I try to help them. One kid survived for most of the match by himself. When he dies, I tell him he did a fantastic job.

The mood shift is practically INSTANT. These kids almost immediately stop being dick heads. They start encouraging each other and being kind. After the match all of them try to friend request me. Which should tell you a couple of things:

A) kids want to be kind, and they want to have a nice time playing games. But encounters with adults like me or so rare that they’ve trained themselves to instantly put on a toxic, shitty, defensive veneer when encountering any new person online. It’s literally just THAT EASY to not groom a horrible gaming community, it’s just that NO ONE does it.

B) the speed of which they all tried to friend me was cute, but paints for me such a sad picture? Like these kids are SO desperate to find people to play with who aren’t crappy jerks. They played with me for 10 minutes TOPS and all instantly tried to reach out to me.

tl;dr: The kids are alright. Adults are shit heads.

Fun Fact: The longest piece of literature ever written is a Loud House fanfiction called "Loud House Revamped".

The fanfiction is currently above 16,777,215 words (we don't know the word count because fanfic.net uses 24-bit integers to count the amount of words and this fic surpassed the computational limit), and is 2000+ chapters. It is written by Jamesdean5842 and is still being written to this day.

The story is about an OC named JD Knudson who moves into the Louds town and goes on adventures with them after creating a superhero team with them. According to the recap (Obviously not even close to finished recap) on Tvtropes.org, the fic consists mainly of loud house episode plots rewritten to include the OC and a multitude of crossovers with other franchises from any piece of media you could possibly think of. (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Recap/TheLoudHouseRevamped)

Some examples of the crossovers are Ed, Edd n Eddy, Naruto, Dante's Inferno, Inside Out, Matilda, Pulp Fiction, CatDog, Metroid, The Simpsons. This is a very small selection of the crossovers done in the fic.

Despite the fic's main characters being minors, the story contains lots of swearing, sex, romance, drugs, and violence. The sheer amount of strange details about this fic is crazy, reading the TVtropes page will give you some intense mental whiplash. (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Fanfic/TheLoudHouseRevamped)

This is just the tip of the iceberg for this story, it is absolutely insane.

Somehow there are still way too many people who think a tailor is someone who makes clothes for men (or worse, just a male clothing-maker). Tailoring is a specific trade with a specific set of techniques—historically, the difference has less to do with gender than it does to do with flat-drafting vs. draping methods of pattern-making and fitting. Tailor is not the male version of seamstress, it is gender-neutral and it refers to its own history (and seamstressing/mantua making is ALSO a trade with its own techniques and history fwiw)

How to make a character's death sadder

Don’t have them die of old age after a long, fulfilling life. Many people don’t even think of this as sad (note that this can still work if you have enough of the other factors).

Leave one of their major goals unfinished. The more enthusiastic they are about completing the goal, the sadder.

Give them strong relationships with other characters.

Make them fight against whatever is causing their death. Their ultimate loss is sadder if they struggle.

Kill them in the middle of their character arc.

Don’t describe their funeral in detail. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that long descriptions of funerals kill the sadness.

Samuel E. Wright On His Role As Sebastian In “The Little Mermaid”

My most favorite moment was when, after years of filming it, and being very strict to animation, because you have to be strict with animation, because it’s timing, and picture, and that kind of thing… And I was very strict with it. But I kept doing things, I’d be naughty, and I’d do something… And they’d say, “Sam, you can’t do that! This is not Robin Williams. You cannot do that, you can’t make up little jokes on the side.” But a year after we finished completing the film, they called me up, and they said, “Sam, we’re going to fly you out here. All of the things we said you couldn’t do… You’ve got three hours to do all of them.” So they brought me in the studio, and they just turned the mike on… and I went nuts! I just said anything I wanted to say like Sebastian. I talked like him for three hours, and some of it found it’s way into the movie. For example: “Teenagers. They think they know everything. You give them an inch, they swim all over you.” That was something that I just made up!

Survivorship Bias

I have posted about survivorship bias and how it affects your career choices: how a Hollywood actor giving the classic “follow your dreams and never give up” line is bad advice and is pure survivorship bias at work.

When I read up on the wikipedia page, I encountered an interesting story:

During WWII the US  Air Force wanted to minimize bomber losses to enemy fire. The Center for Naval Analyses ran a research on where bombers tend to get hit with the explicit aim of enforcing the parts of the airframe that is most likely to receive incoming fire. This is what they came up with:

image

So, they said: the red dots are where bombers are most likely to be hit, so put some more armor on those parts to make the bombers more resilient. That looked like a logical conclusion, until Abraham Wald - a mathematician - started asking questions:

- how did you obtain that data? - well, we looked at every bomber returning from a raid, marked the damages on the airframe on a sheet and collected the sheets from all allied air bases over months. What you see is the result of hundreds of those sheets. - and your conclusion? - well, the red dots are where the bombers were hit. So let’s enforce those parts because they are most exposed to enemy fire.  - no. the red dots are where a bomber can take a hit and return. The bombers that took a hit to the ailerons, the engines or the cockpit never made it home. That’s why they are absent in your data. The blank spots are exactly where you have to enforce the airframe, so those bombers can return.

This is survivorship bias. You only see a subset of the outcomes. The ones that made it far enough to be visible. Look out for absence of data. Sometimes they tell a story of their own.

BTW: You can see the result of this research today. This is the exact reason the A-10 has the pilot sitting in a titanium armor bathtub and has it’s engines placed high and shielded.

MERMAIDS, SIRENS, SELKIES, WATER NYMPHS, AND NEREIDS ARE NOT THE SAME THINGS!

MERMAIDS ARE HALF SEA CREATURE ON BOTTOM AND HALF HUMAN ON TOP. THEY LIVE IN THE OCEAN.

SIRENS ARE OFTEN CONFUSED WITH MERMAIDS BUT ARE ACTUALLY HALF BIRD AND HALF HUMAN, AND THEY LURE YOU TO YOUR DEATH BY TELLING YOU WHAT YOU TRULY DESIRE.

SELKIES ARE HUMANS THAT TURN INTO SEALS. IF YOU STEAL THEIR SEALSKIN THEY ARE BOUND TO YOU.

WATER NYMPHS CAN LIVE IN FRESHWATER OR SALT WATER AND LOOK HUMAN-LIKE BUT ARE IN FACT NATURE SPIRITS.

NEREIDS ARE A TYPE OF WATER NYMPH BUT ARE OCEAN NYMPHS. THERE ARE ONLY 100 OF THEM AND THEY ARE THE DAUGHTERS OF NEREUS AND DORIS, DORIS BEING THE DAUGHTER OF OCEANUS.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!

Play “Never Have I Ever” with my muse!

Send “Never have I ever” and tell my muse something that yours has never done. If my muse has done the thing, they have to take a drink. The maximum is 10 drinks!

Good luck!

My Cowboy.

My Cowboy.

He needed help. And how could I help a cowboy? What was the best way to help him? I have no fucking idea.

"All apologies man! What else could I say?"

Is it weird to say that when he said this, I had the best eargasm ever. It's not because it's spring and in this season women are particularly "in heat", but the thing is that he looked hot as hell when he said this to my dad.

Now, to help the man that accidentally spilled his coffee drink on my texan dad's shirt, I said that he was a dear friend of mine and that he didn't do that on purpose.

My dad looked at me as if I killed his dog Roofus. Acting as if I was innocent, I look back at him and say "What's up? You're surely not mad just because of a mere shirt getting dirty, are you? Come on now dad! Can you go inside and get me a cappuccino please?" by now I was only rambling. But nonetheless my dad nodded at the man and went inside.

"Thanks for getting me out of the dirt, doll. He was pissed as hell, thought he was gon beat the fuck outta me and I would never see the light again." he said while chuckling.

"Nah, don't sweat it. You know texan men have anger issues." I laugh.

"Name's Blaze by the way. Nice to meet you." he gave me his hand and I shook it while saying: "I'm Brooklyn. Nice to meet ya too! Are you new to town? Haven't seen ya round here before"

"Yeahhh. Got here a week ago. Moved from Dallas. Wanted to change scenery and got to Austin. People 've told me that they have pretty cowgirls 'roun here, you know."

Oh you sneaky little shit.

Screenshot of a tweet that reads: Yknow what I’d like to see as an illustrator?

A database of cultural clothes/items submitted by people within those cultures with info like how often its used and reference photos

It would make diversity in art so much easier

Is there something like that??

tweet

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.

Wait a second: cuckoos are nest parasites. Do "cuckoo" and "cuckold" share a common root?

Etymology:

From Middle English cokolde, cokewold, cockewold, kukwald, kukeweld, from Old French cucuault; a compound of cucu (“cuckoo”) (some varieties of the cuckoo bird lay their eggs in another’s nest) and Old French -auld. Cucu is either a directly derived onomatopoeic derivative of the cuckoo's call, or from Latin cucūlus. Latin cucūlus is a compound of onomatopoeic cucu (compare Late Latin cucus) and the diminutive suffix -ulus.

Old French -auld is from Frankish *-wald (similar suffixes are used in some personal names within other Germanic languages as well; compare English Harold, for instance), a suffixal use of Frankish *wald (“wielder, ruler, leader”), from Proto-Germanic *waldaz (compare German Gewalt, from the related *waldą (“power, might”)), from *waldaną (“to rule”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂welh₁- (“to be strong; to rule”).

Appears in Middle English in noun form circa 1250 as cokewald. First known use of the verb form is 1589.

Huh. Apparently the etymology of "cuckold" is literally something along the lines of "cuckoo-lord".
