Marie’s parents have briefly appeared in my another artwork. They are an example of marriage diplomacy, where there was no place for true love. Her father never aspired to be king and had no clear idea of what he wanted from life. Apathetic and lacking initiative, he left all the political duties to his wife. The queen, extremely concerned about their family's status, demands that all members of the family be perfect in every aspect to maintain the royal dynasty’s flawless image.
But, as you can imagine, things didn’t exactly go according to plan with Marie. 🤷♀️

Marie’s homeland kingdom lacked all the 'modern conveniences' that others took for granted. Isolation only deepened the inhabitants’ unfamiliarity with the outside world. So, when she was gifted a Den-Den Mushi, Marie was completely bewildered. Not only that she has no idea how to use it, but she was also terrified of possibly hurting the creature. Even the thought of making calls and communicating through such a device filled her with genuine anxiety.

I present to you - Wanderer Jack and his companion, the backpack-magpie Esther (she's literally a backpack with Devil Fruit's powers)
+ a few facts
🍀° Jack says of himself that he is not a pirate, not an adventurer, not a bounty hunter. Just simply a stranger who travels from island to island.
🍀° He is willing to listen to people's problems 24/7 to help everyone around him feel better (even if you've only known him for a few minutes). However, he never talks about himself. People think of him as a harmless and friendly weirdo.
🍀° He can be annoying with his endless calmness in situations of any degree.
🍀° Distinguishing features: burn marks on his hands, tattoo on his chest.

This is a very interesting question, actually!

Marie began to develop her abilities only after meeting the Hawkins' pirates (from the beginning of her main storyline, let's say). Before that, she had only learned how to keep the power of her Devil fruit under control to avoid harming anyone.
A significant role in this is played by Marie's origins. She comes from a small kingdom lost somewhere in the New World. This kingdom is closer to the Medieval in terms of its infrastructure, lifestyle, and worldview.
In her homeland, no one had ever heard of Devil Fruits, so people and even almost her entire family perceived Marie as some kind of witch or demon.
Marie was able to properly train and develop her abilities only many years later, right after meeting the pirates. Because they explained to her that she was neither a witch nor a monster, but an ordinary person who was both lucky and unlucky at the same time.
I just love creating a gloomy atmosphere in a character's backstory (because honestly, who doesn't?), where everyone thinks she's the embodiment of pure evil
When in reality, she is: 💕🌸✨️🎀🦄

My sincere headcanon is that Basil likes to collect various things/arefacts that have some "bad history". Even better if they're cursed
