I've Been Away For A Bit Because, You Know, College. And I Have To Read These Two For Classes. Life's

i've been away for a bit because, you know, college. and i have to read these two for classes. life's been boring lately, but i'm fine with that.

sometimes it rains and it's like nothing more exists. incredible how rain has the power to make me feel safe. 🌧🤍

"mutuals can ask for discord" mutuals can haunt me after they die. mutuals can paint my immortal youth in a cursed portrait. mutuals can build a 8ft tall creature in my college dorm. mutuals can watch me wake up as a monstrous vermin. mutuals can feed me soup after i commit murder. mutuals can help me kill uncle claudius. mutuals can go out with me and my girlfriend from across the bay. mutuals can hunt the beast with me. do better

One thing about Hamlet (that I’m not sure was intentional or not, but is cool either way) is how the end goes on longer than is necessarily comfortable. How after Hamlet dies and Horatio says goodnight and all that, Fortinbras comes in and the ending keeps going for a little longer. Not terribly long, but just long enough it’s a little awkward (at least to me). However, in modern adaptations, Fortinbras coming in is often omitted. I do not like this. I get that’s it’s nicer to end right after Hamlet’s death, but I would say Hamlet is less of a story about death, and more about grief. The beginning of the story, Hamlet’s father’s death, isn’t even in the play. Because the play is about the grief that came from Hamlet’s father’s death and the things said grief drives Hamlet to do and contemplate, not the death itself. To have the play continue on after Hamlet’s death, even just for a bit, continues that theme. It forces the audience to see how life carries on, and so do the effects (the grief!!) of the tragedies. This places the emphasis on the grief over the death. The play begins with the grief of one Hamlet’s death and ends with the grief of another.

At least, I think that’s a nice interpretation.

Smoked a half a cigarette that I found on the ground yesterday, and then my head started hurting. feeling like hamlet in the final scene

O, I die, Horatio;  / The potent poison of the ground cigarette quite o'er-crows my spirit:  / I cannot live to hear the news from England;  But I do prophesy the election lights / On ground cigarette: he has my dying voice;  / So tell him, with the occurrents, more and less,  / Which have solicited. The rest is silence.

Good Omens Hamlet

Do y’all ever think about what David must have had to deal with listening to that awful rendition of to be or not to be I mean hell, the actor had some of the words wrong and was terrible lol. I know it was purposeful but like as a Shakespeare geek seeing the supposed Richard Burbage be such a bad actor physically hurt me. I can’t imagine what David, a classically trained actor, who played Hamlet on the West End, must have felt.

My favourite Shakespeare quotes:

"We know what we are, but know not what we may be" - Hamlet

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts" - As You Like It

"Good company, good wine, good welcome can make good people" -Henry VIII

"This above all: to thine own self be true" -Hamlet

"There is nothing either good or bad, but things making it so" -Hamlet

"I do love nothing in this world so well as you; is not that strange?" -Much ado about nothing

"O happy dagger, This is thy sheath: there rust, and let me die" -Romeo and Juliet

"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool" -As You Like It

"Give me my robe, put on my crown; I have Immortal longings in me" -Antony and Cleopatra

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves." -Julius Caesar

"Et tu, Brute?" -Julius Caesar

"Lord, what fools these mortals be!" - A Midsummer night's dream

"For she had eyes and chose me" -Othello

"But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve. For daws to peck at: I am not what I am" -Othello

"If she lives till doomsday, she'll burn a week longer than the whole world" -The comedy of errors

"Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn, and cauldron bubble!" -Macbeth

"Look like the innocent flower, But be the serpent under it" -Macbeth

"Life ... is a tale. Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, Signifying nothing" -Macbeth

Someone today will read Shakespeare’s hamlet and say omg he’s just like me fr. Another person will read moby dick and proclaim Ishmael as an adhd king.

A person grieving for their recently deceased lover reads the iliad and they watch as Achilles rages and rages and god how righteous anger fueld by love is so devastating that it’s ramifications still affect the world several thousand years later.

We might one day settle down and read the epic of gilgamesh and watch as a king has to accept the death of the person he loved the most. One of the very first stories ever written and it was about coping with death, and how to grieve.

We don’t read classics because they’re old, we read them because they remind us that we are never alone. That a character created over 500 years ago struggled with the exact same problems we all still have today. That even a king from centuries past had to deal with death just like me. That’s what makes stories so powerful–they prove to us that we are never truly alone in what we are feeling.
